A Modern Day Caliper
With the rapid advancement in technology even the most mundane tools have been given a fresh new high-tech edge to make your life a lot easier. The simple act of measuring objects has been made much simpler thanks to the invention of the electronic digital caliper.
A caliper is a tool for measuring objects, whether it’s the distance between two sides of a brick or the interior diameter of a pipe. A caliper is used to give a quick and extremely accurate measurement, but the readout always had to be read from the line markings to work out what the correct measurement was. There were always accuracy problems with the old analog calipers and there was also room for the operator to make a mistake in reading the results.
With an electronic digital caliper the measurement is displayed on an LCD screen right there at the top of the caliper. There is absolutely no problem with interpreting the measurement and the screen can be displayed in either metric or inches. The precision of the tool has been guaranteed to a differential of 0.0005mm for a 150mm caliper, which is easily enough for the purposes of most tradesmen.
As well as an on/off switch there is a reset switch plus a dial to lock the jaws in place after taking the reading to keep the measurement on-screen after it has been used in difficult to reach places.
If there is a problem with using an electronic digital caliper it may be that the LCD display is powered by a small battery. This means that there is a possibility that the screen will become inoperable if the battery were to go flat. The better digital calipers can overcome this problem because they also display the visual gradations on the side of the tool.
