Carpet Underlay For Longer Carpet Life

Carpet underlay is a product that goes by different names around the world. The people of the United States call it carpet padding while the term carpet underlay is more popular in the United Kingdom. No matter what it is called, choosing the correct carpet underlay can sometimes be a difficult task. You may be advised to buy the most expensive padding you can find. You may also hear the advice that says since carpet pad is not seen save you money and go cheap. Neither of these are correct. Instead you should choose the underlay according to the carpet you choose.

Carpet underlay serves a very important purpose beyond making your carpet feel soft underfoot. It extends the life of the carpet. Without a good pad, the fibers of the carpet are ground into the floor. This does not allow the carpet fibers to spring back into shape and causes wear patterns to develop before they should. Underlay makes a shock absorber that allows those fibers to bounce back as they should. Thus the life of your carpet is extended and you save the cost of early replacement of the carpet.

Do not fall for underlay carpet that is too thick. If the underlay is over five sixteenths of an inch, it will also cause the carpet to wear quickly. Think of carpet fibers as rubber bands. There is a certain amount of stretch that they have from which they can bounce back. If you exceed the stretch the fiber breaks and causes carpet wear. Padding that is too thick allows for that type of stretch.

Just because you purchase a cheap carpet underlay does not mean it is not as good as the more expensive brand. The basic qualities of an underlay no matter the cost should always be durability and comfort.
