Calcium Lime Rust Remover Dangers

I live in an area with really hard water.  The water leaves horrible hard water deposits all over the house.  We found a product called Calcium Lime Rust remover which does wonders at removing these types of stains and deposits.  Everything worked out well, except I ended up doing something dumb which ended costing me a lot in the long run.

Calcium Lime Rust remover is a caustic solutions that dissolves away hard water stains.  If you have a shower head that isn't spraying like it used to back in the day, it probably is full of hard water deposits.  Just soak it in a bucket of CLR for a few minutes and your shower head will start to work like new.  This also works for faucet aerators, giving you a much better flow of water.

The stuff was working so well that I decided to use it on the hard water deposits on my refrigerator.  We have one of those automatic water dispensers in the front of our fridge.  Whenever you use it a few drops always fall when you pull your glass away.  This extra water is caught by a plastic catch basin, which over the years had built up about an eighth of an inch of lime deposits.  Nothing would remove the deposits so I tried CLR on them.  It worked great and removed all of the deposits, but I should have read the directions more closely.  While I was cleaning the basin the kitchen I spilled some CLR cleaner on to our counters and some into our aluminum sink.  CLR didn't like either of these and turned part of our sink black, and turned part of our counters white.  Had I read the instructions more closely I would have seen that these surfaces did not react well to Calcium Lime Rust remover.

So remember to be careful when using CLR.  It works really well at its intended tasks.
