    • ]]>     travertine-tilePutting down tiles in your home instead of carpet is a great way to add a touch of class that will look as stylish in a decade as the day you lay it. Its true the floor tiles can be expensive and that they are more of a hassle to put down but most people would agree that the results are worth it. And it doesn't matter what room in the house you are decorating, something like travertine tile can go just about anywhere. The only thing that might put you off using it in certain rooms is if you live in a cold climate and want the coziness of carpet in, for example, the living room.

    Travertine tiles are my favorite choice at the moment, even though many people haven't heard of them. But this natural stone tile is a cost effective way to make your house look spectacular with a beauty that is hard to find in any other material except perhaps the prohibitively expensive marble.

    The first thing that many people ask when they hear about and see travertine is where does it come from what is it made of. As an interior decorator these questions are no concern of mine. The only thing on my mind is how good does it look, does it stand up to the use it gets and is it cost effective for my clients.

    The fact is that this material is perfect for those who want to give the impression that they have spent a fortune on their interior without having to break the bank. That's not to say that travertine tiles are cheap but they are certainly within the financial reach of much who desire them.

    The singular negative to using them is that you need to take care to keep them in fantastic condition. When delivering them they have to be handled with care to ensure they don't crack and they need to be protected from acids to avoid staining the surface.

    If your able to bare the couple of negative points then travertine tile could be the perfect choice to make your new bathroom look absolutely stunning.

    • ]]>     Whether you are just starting to remodel your basement or really just thinking about it, this would be the guide for you. This book has it all from actually planning the project to physically doing the work. The good thing is it's brought to you in a fashion that an everyday handyman can handle. No professionals allowed here. Well, there are stints where he'll suggest some professional help but other than that, the author really does a good job walking you through everything thats needed for a successful basement remodeling project. From planning to drywalling those basement walls, it's in there. From painting to framing, it's in there. In full color pictures and some very helpful pro tips along the way, I really enjoyed this one. The one thing that did seem to be slighted a bit was that surrounding older basements. He does talk about some of the nuances of them but most of tips seemed geared to ones less than 10 years old.

The problem is that most people will treat the garage area like a stepchild when it comes to home maintenance and in time it can prove to be quite costly. Here's an interesting little tidbit and something you probably didn't know. Did you know that your homes largest moving part is the garage door, in most all cases? For almost all homes this holds true. And if you don't take care of it, all those moving parts can stop working with time and wear.

    The garage door, and if you have a garage door opener, need to be maintained just like your other home appliances and fixtures. You might even get into an occasion where you are planning on upgrading an existing garage by adding a new garage door or electric door opener. You might even be looking adding some more sufficient storage areas to it so you can stow away all those tools and seasonal items a bit better. If you're like most people or really nothing more than a packrat, you can get some very odd and rather large collections going on in a garage that can simply make it unusable. But before we even get there, let's start on the exterior of the garage itself and talk some about the different types of doors available.

    There are basically two main types of garage doors. One model is a tilt-up and the others are sectional roll-ups. A roll-up garage door is one of the most common types on the market today. It's basically made up of several "sections" that are hinged together and open and close on a roller system. The most popular are those that have the rollers on tracks but there are still some in use that use an actual roller system where the entire garage door looks like a rolled up carpet hanging from the top of your garage. They typically have a torsion spring across the top of the door that helps you when lifting it up as they can be quite heavy. Others may have extension springs along the side that will do the same. They easier of the two to install is the extension springs, but with a torsion spring model you won't need to maintain it as much as you might the extension springs.

    The second type are tilt-up garage doors. You may hear them called swing-up or one-piece doors as well. Basically they are a solid pane system mounted on hinges at the side with spings at the side to ease the lifting. The good benefit to these types of doors is that they are typically less expensive, but you will give up some headroom with this model. The downside to them is that they swing outward so you can't park too close.

    The similar thing about these two types of garage doors is that they are made in a variety of materials, they can both have the same style to them like either raised or recessed panels and they both can have windows and electric door openers installed for use.
