Aluminium Ladder
Ladders that are meant to reach as high as a second story window or roof tend to be heavy and cumbersome to transport. A lighter weight aluminium ladder makes carrying and raising the ladder far easier for a single person. This lack of weight does not mean that the ladder in any way compromises strength for the sake of easier handling; aluminum ladders are actually quite stable and strong, typically able to support a 300lb person. Before using any ladder, be sure to check the specifications of the ladder to determine the maximum safe extension height and weight limitations before use. Remember, you have to consider the weight of any supplies you may carry up the ladder in addition to your body weight when using the ladder.
Attic and loft ladders are traditionally crafted out of wood. As they age, the can become cracked as the wood dries, making use potentially hazardous. They also tend to be heavy, clacking down loudly once you pull on the spring suspended door. Newer aluminium loft ladders are made out of an alloy similar to that used in lightweight outdoor ladders. Aluminum does not rust; it will not crack as it ages and is extremely lightweight. The lighter weight of an aluminum ladder will make it easier to raise into your attic opening, and it will put less stress on the load bearing joists of the attic floor. There is a bit more cost involved, but it is well worth the long term durability offered by aluminum.
A loft can add rustic charm to any home, summer home, or camp. They are also a great way to add vertical storage to your home. Lofts are easy to build if you have experience in carpentry, and should be a relatively quick project. Basic materials could be purchased at Home Depot or another building supply store. If you are using your loft for storage, you don't need to decorate it if you don't want to, since no one will see it! This will save valuable time and money. However you may want to choose a nice-looking ladder or steps to reach the loft, because it will be seen by anyone who comes to your house. Aluminum loft ladders can be found for sale in many locations and online, or you could build your own ladder from a beautiful shade of wood, and even paint and stain it.
If you aren't a practiced carpenter, contact a local contractor who can give you an estimate for the costs of adding a loft to your home.
