Improving Your Home with Attic Insulation

Winter time is often a reminder that you need to do everything you possibly can to help keep the heat inside your home. There are the obvious items such as sealing doors and windows with weatherstripping, but the most effective measure to improve your homes heat efficiency is to install attic insulation. You can literally see as much as 30% to 40% reduction in your heating bill every month. That is by far the most effective reduction in cost of any home improvement activity you can possibly do. The best part is that it is relatively inexpensive to purchase the supplies needed and you can easily complete the project yourself. I recommend purchasing bags of loose fill insulation at your local home store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. They often offer a deal if you purchase enough bags that you get the blower machine one day for free which is plenty of time for you to complete your project.

It depends on the location and climate of your home as to how much insulation you are going to need to effectively insulate the attic. I recommend blowing in at the very least twelve inches of loose fill. If you live in a colder climate, you may want to do as much as eighteen to twenty four inches of insulation. There are a few different types of insulation such as spray foam insulation, but I much prefer the cellulose kind. It is super cheap and does a really good job. It is also fire retardant which is a major plus and if you are environmentally conscious, it also is made from recycled parts. It is pretty hard to find so many advantages in one product I think.

When you get around to making your install, you really need to have at least one other person helping you preferably to load the machine under you. The install goes much quicker when you are able to continuously spray the insulation. The rest is just making sure to spread the insulation as evenly as possible across the attic filling in between the rafters.
