Preparing Mahogany Exterior Doors for Finishing

Before applying any finish to mahogany exterior doors, either stain or paint, preparation is the key to a first class finish.

Below are some tips in handling and preparation.

You have got to remember you don’t want unnecessary marks or blemishes on the doors due to careless handling.

When the doors have been delivered to the site, or your home, you want to keep handing to a minimum thus avoiding accidental damage. Do not store in such a way that someone could walk on top of them. This is especially important if the doors contain glass panels that could break and cause injury.

If a number of doors are delivered to the site at the same time, do not, when stacking, drag the door surface over the door below causing marks. Have someone help you to lift each door clean away from the one below.

It a good idea to store the doors in the building before fitting allowing them to become acclimatized to the environment and avoid them being subject to sudden changes in the humidity or heat. Store the doors on a flat clean surface in a room that is well ventilated and dry.

It is a good idea to seal all edges of the doors with an oil based sealer. This will prevent the door absorbing any undue moisture.

Preparation - take your time to prepare the doors. Extra work at this stage will produce good results later. Make sure you read the finishing recommendations as supplied by the manufacturers. There may be some requirements to follow to be in compliance with the doors warranty.

Before starting the preparation, it is best to fit all the doors into the door frames first of all. Marks to the doors during the fitting can be removed when preparing.

Remove the doors and take off all the ironmongery. The hinge and lock recesses are then exposed for sealing. Using abrasive paper (say 180 grit - fine), sand the entire surface and edges of the door removing all marks, finger prints etc. Do not hurry this part.

After sanding thoroughly remove all evidence of dust from the door surface. Use a dry cloth and do not use any liquid cleaners.

When applying the door finish, make sure you seal all of the surfaces with the same number of coats including the ironmongery cut outs. Always allow sufficient time for each coat to dry before applying any subsequent coats.
