Power tools benefit even more than regular tools from a little care and attention. With a few simple actions you can extend the life of your power tools and keep them in good working condition so that when you next need them, they’re ready.
- Clean the tool after use and before putting it away. This will save time when you next want to use the tool and save money in new parts, repairs or replacement tools. Dust is the biggest enemy of almost any power tool. It gets into moving parts and clogs cooling vents. Clean the dust off and out of your power tools and you’ll keep them running happily. If they’re gas-powered, remember to empty the fuel reservoir before storage.
- For tools like chainsaws, make sure to clean and sharpen the cutting surfaces regularly. Oily sawdust can build up in crevices and become fire hazards, and the tool will wear out sooner if forced to cut while blunt. Tools like chainsaw chain sharpeners will make this task that much easier.
- If you do a lot of work that generates dust, consider investing in a cheap vacuum cleaner and running it with the suction nozzle near your working area. Most of the fine dust, which is the most damaging for power tools and the hardest to clean out, will get sucked into the cleaner instead of drifting around and settling into your tools (and your lungs). Needless to say, you must remember to empty the vacuum cleaner when it gets full! However, this is an investment well worth making, especially if you are using power tools around the home.
- Regularly run a few drops of light oil into the moving parts of your power tools. You don’t have to do this every time you use them, but if you have used a tool for some hours or in rough conditions (very hot weather, lots of dust, etc) it makes sense to oil it after cleaning. This helps make sure any plastic or rubber parts don’t dry out and keeps the friction down. Again, your tools will last longer and work better for it.
- Make sure storage areas are dry, cool and protected from dust and spills.
