Before engaging in any home decor project, I like to know what materials will be used--plus, this keeps me from sounding completely clueless when I'm talking to the the contractor who will be working on the job.
Stone work and interior stone decorating are becoming increasingly popular for use in home design. Stone fits right in with many different types of home decor, from traditional to modern. When discussing building projects with your Phoenix contractor, or contractor in your local city, it is always good to know a little bit about your stone options. Here is a rundown of the many different types of stones there are to choose from.
Natural Flat Stones. For interior stone wall designs flat, rectangular stones are desirable. They come in different sizes and colors which you can combine or mix and match to create stunningly textured back splashes. Flagstone rocks are one variety of a natural, flat stone that is made of sedimentary rock. These are interesting because they naturally come in shades of beige, blue, gray, and so on. Ashlar stones are another flat stone variety that is easy to work with. When using these natural stones you must remember to apply a stone sealer to prevent the rocks from soiling.
Veneer stones. These are manufactured "stones" that have the real look of natural stone. They are created using concrete and colored with special dying agents that give them a natural color. Veneer stones are a good choice if you want to add stone to something like a fireplace.
Cobblestone. This is another natural variety of stone. These stones include granite stones, river rocks, and many other varieties of quarried stone. These stones can also be cut and finished for a geometrical look.
Marble. This is a popular stone choice because of it's many color varieties and it's characteristic look. Homeowners love the smooth finish of marble as well as its swirl design. Marble is composed of crystallized limestone, and is capable of taking a polish which brings out its color and design.
Granite. This is another extremely popular choice of rock. It is a form of igneous rock with a distinctive "grained" texture that is appealing to homeowners. Like marble, granite is considered a "dimension stone" that is used often in home building and construction. It is prized for its durability and is being used more and more often to create monuments and other outdoor construction pieces because it can withstand acid rain better than marble.
Home builders in the Phoenix construction industry, and home builders in every city, can use stone to create magnificent interior and exterior designs that are unique to each home. There are a myriad of stonework options that you can go over with your contractor, and even a multitude of DIY stonework projects that you can do on your own. So pick a stone and get started!
