By following these simple steps to clean mold related issues in your house you can ensure you have a safe and successful mold remediation experience. Removing mold is not something to take lightly(read is mold dangerous?), do it wrong and you risk getting sick, the mold returning or significant costs if the mold spreads to other parts of your house.
Step #1 – Determining Where The Mold Is
Search in and around the bathroom, if you are doing a bathroom remodel keep an eye out for mold when you are removing tile, replacing the floor or removing and replacing the wall surface. If water has been leaking under the surface of the floors or walls for any length of time you will more than likely find some traces of mold.
Do not take any chances and risk your health, if you think you have mold wear safety equipment, at the very least wear a mask, gloves, eye protection and old clothing that can be disposed of.
Another common place for mold is in the basement, basements are humid and moist in the summer time, this with the higher counts of mold spores in the air is a sure bet for mold issues. Fix any moisture issues right away and keep the area dry. If you do not find any mold but notice it is humid purchase a standard residential dehumidifier, this will help remove moisture from the air and rid your basement of that musty smell.
Look in your attic and check for any roof leaks, if you find any pinpoint the source of the leaks and repair it replacing and shingles as required. Some small roof leaks can be repaired with roofing tar.
If you find moisture and something you suspect is mold you can either have a professional come in and do a series of moisture, mold spore and air quality tests or you can purchase a DIY mold test kit, many of these kits cost about $20 and are really easy to do.
If it is confirmed you have mold or something more serious like black mold you can do the cleanup yourself for small areas or have a company that comes in that specializes in black mold removal.
