If the windows in your home are dumpy and unattractive then they’re going to need some help from you. On the other hand if the windows are fabulous already they should be left alone. Most people immediately and try and bury a window under a lot of twirls, swirls and curls. It’s much more important to respect the integrity of the window and what it represents – a light source and a sight of the world.
Each window in your home should be looked at both individually and as a group within a room. Why should you treat the window if it’s already a wonderful light source with a great view and privacy is not a concern? All windows should look like a well-dressed person. In a sense, curtains are in fact clothes for a window and their only purpose is should be to complement and flatter the window.
The goal is to give windows height so it doesn't look short and dumpy. This is easily done because you will always have walls to play with. You slenderize the window by using vertical fabrics and you must remember to treat each window on how it affects the room.
If you already have custom-made shutters or your home is architecturally what it needs to be then the window should not be smothered with curtains. Some of the most important considerations before treating any window are your need for privacy, fresh air, light and outside views. You can do amazing things with simple fabrics once you know what the goal of the window will be.
Window treatments should bring out the strength, simplicity, quietness and purity of a room. Draperies should be strong enough to stand on their own without the need for tricks. Texture and fabric are generally easier to work with than are patterns. Try to avoid the clutter because over accessorizing a window can make the energy in the room feel heavy.
