A very popular material for worktops currently is granite. For years this option was only available to the super-rich but now with new manufacturing techniques it has become available to the average homeowner. Granite is very beautiful and when it is polished with these new techniques the structure of the minerals show up and can be quite intriguing.
Installing granite kitchen worktops can be a do-it-yourself project or you can have a contractor specializing in kitchens install them. If you plan to do it by yourself be aware of two important facts. The pieces will be very heavy so be sure to have several friends available on the day of installation (and don’t start drinking the beer until after the pieces are set). Also, measuring is super important because once the slab of stone is cut and the openings for the sink, etc. are opened they can not be changed. The old adage to measure twice and cut once is doubly important because if you make a measurement error of even a cm you can ruin your entire slab. This is a costly mistake.
Granite works very well as a worktop material because it is very dense and hard. Formed deep under the ground, granite is actually comprised of molten rock that has been allowed to harden and cool for millions of years. As the rock cools the different minerals coalesce with themselves and make larger and larger grains. This is the structural pattern that is seen when the piece is polished.
One of the best things about granite is the many hues that are available depending on the minerals present when the rock formed underground. These range from black and deep red to almost pure white. There really is a color of granite that will match any color scheme in the entire home or just the kitchen.
