If you are thinking about replacing your carpet and installing slate tiles then you might be wondering about how these two common floor materials compare. There are advantages and disadvantages of both. What is comes down to is how much time you have to take care of the floor and who lives in your house. For example, if you have children or pets, they are much harder on floor surfaces and tend to track in more dirt than an all adult family of two. However, even if you have people in your house who are hard on floors, if you have the time to clean them often then it shouldn’t matter.
Carpets need to be vacuumed often if they are to remain in top condition. A good rule to follow is that you should vacuum once per week for every member of your household. That means if there are only two of you, then you should run the vacuum twice a week. However, if you have a family of four then you need to run the vacuum once every other day. It is important to note that vacuuming alone is not enough to keep your carpet looking like new. You also need to periodically shampoo your carpets. If your carpets do not see much foot traffic then once a year is plenty, but a more active family should shampoo their carpets more often. Shampooing is a chore that you can complete yourself or you can hire a carpet cleaning professional to do the job. Research different cleaning companies in your area before hiring one to make sure you are getting a good deal. I read many Dalworth Clean reviews before I decided to use them.
Slate tile is a little easier to clean than carpet. You can clean the tile floor with a broom on a daily basis to keep the big pieces out of sight and then use a mop on a weekly basis to get dirt that adheres to the tile. You will periodically need to clean the grout in between your tiles and that is a bit more involved. You can rent a steam cleaner and do the job yourself or hire a professional cleaning company. You will need to do this as often as you would shampoo your carpets so there is no advantage there. The advantage is that the daily and weekly cleanings are easier.
A possible downside to carpet is that is stains easily and it is hard to remove stains once they set in. Your only option may be to replace the carpet at some point. A possible downside to tile is the fact that tiles can break if something heavy is dropped on them. You would need to replace the broken tile if that were to happen. Replacing one tile is probably more cost effective than replacing an entire carpeted room. However if you ever want a change then changing the carpet is definitely cheaper than tearing up and replacing an entire tile floor.
