What Is the make-up of an organic bed?

If you have heard someone talk about an organic bed you may have thoughts flash through your head of leaves crushed up and sewn into larger palm tree branches.  I seriously thought of a bed filled with hemp or some other crazy natural product.  True to form I was wrong and the organic bed has a ton of great advantages over the typical manufactured beds, and over a foam mattress pad.

Let us start with what makes the bed organic.  It does not mean the bed was grown out in a field or that you get a mattress cover filled with grass.  Organic beds are organic because the materials used to create them have not been chemically altered to adjust them past their natural make up and are not mixed with chemically altered products to bind or form them.

So a typical bed has a box spring to provide foundational support as well as a mattress to provide the comfort and body shaping while you sleep and ultimately this mattress is where the magic happens.  Well not really the magic, but its where all the comfort is found.  In typical mattresses this layer can be filled with springs or springs wrapped in plastic or springs wrapped in plastic wrapped in foam, or just straight layers of foam or combination of the two.

Organic mattresses have a layer of natural latex made from wood, and combined at different proportions to provide a targeted level of comfort.  The first 2 or 3 inches are made from natural wool.  This will is hypoallergenic meaning it won’t release scents or chemicals as you sleep.  The wool is fire retardant and naturally bacteria killing.  The wool selected for most organic beds is woven to become fairly resilient or ‘springy,’ which adds to the comfort level and durability of the bed.

Under the layer of wool are several different layers of natural breathable latex which provide the custom layer of support.  Organic beds are produced individually rather than in mass quantities and because of this there is a greater area for your input.  In fact, most organic bed companies will have a specific sleep expert to help you design the bed based on your desired level of firmness.

Adjustable beds are also becoming more and more popular and organic beds have made the adaptation as well.  These organic beds are helpful to both hospitals and patients alike because they are not produced with the same chemicals.  So, yes, you can buy an organic mattress even if you want to buy an adjustable bed.  My memory foam mattress pad is even a better option than an old used pad.
