Since it seems to be more and more common to find thicker mattresses these days, it is interesting to discuss how thick is thick. Specifically, how thick a futon mattress might be. There are various manufacturers, brands, styles, and, thus, thicknesses. The thing to know about futon mattress dimensions that you may be unaware of is that they are very similar to standard or conventional mattresses.
There was a time when they didn’t measure quite the same, but this changed when the big names in the mattress industry got into making futons as well. Once they moved more into the Western market, making futon beds in standard sizes just makes the whole process easier. It is easier to utilized existing machinery and easier to wrap and ship with the same size boxes. It is also beneficial to the end consumer as we can then find sheets much more easily. In fact, you can just use your existing sheets in most cases.
The only time you’ll run into problems is if you have much older sheets. The problem with a futon – if you can call it that – is that the corners are more rounded than a traditional mattress. The thickness of a futon varies, but can range from 6” to close to 10”. This trend to have thicker mattresses is not just with the futon. In fact, some mattresses on more conventional frames are now trending into the 20-22” size. This requires special deep pocket sheets, as they’re called, just to get a proper fit. You shouldn’t find this issue with your futon, however.
If you’re just browsing around getting a feel for what is available in futons, just know that the numbers listed are not always completely accurate. While this article can’t reference each brand name and the ‘actual’ versus the ‘quoted’ sizes, it is wise to know that there is a discrepancy at times. You’ll find more out about this if you read any reviews on sites like Amazon or others concerning the products you’re interested in. In terms of futon mattresses, the site might say that their mattress is 8” thick and people write a review saying the quality was great and the shipping was quick, but the mattress can’t be more than 6” thick. Beware of this as you search for your next futon.
