At some point in all of our married or adult lives it is likely someone will need to live with you for a while. If you are reading this article you have probably reached that point! Now the question is, where are you going to let them live without intruding on either of your lives. Lets take a look at some of your options.
The first thing you will need to assess is how far you are going to need to be from your new roommates at any time. This could vary depending on factors such as their health or age. Perhaps everyone is healthy though and you can place them in a area farther from your personal home. This is obviously the most desired option for both your privacy and theirs. Now take a look at your available outbuildings and there size and accessibility. A "pool house" or detached garage will suit well for your needs. The largest obstacle to overcome with converting existing property such as these will be permitting them for this new use. You will need to talk with your local board and inspectors to make sure that no problems will arise at any point in the building process. It would truly be a shame to find that you have not been granted a sewage permit after you have spent thousands converting a useful building into what is now a house with no use!
Most families will find that the most practical way to move the "family" in is by converting their basement for apartment use. Before you go setting the furniture in place though you need to look at some of the safety factors. In a basement the living conditions are a little varied from the rest of your home. Things like radon gas and mold or mildew need to be checked for by a trained technician. Radon gas is a odorless colorless gas that is know to cause cancer and can exist almost anywhere. If your basement was never a living space before then chances are it has not been inspected for Radon in the past. This is because in normal conditions and with minimal venting to the outside the gas will dissipate before affecting the rest of the home. It also has not been a very largely published topic until recent years so there has been no public awareness. If Radon is found you still have options for removal of it from your basement. Most of the time a powered vent system that vents to the outside of your home much like your sewage is all that is needed to remove and protect your home. While you were having this inspected you also should have been checking for mold along the way. Most mold and mildew problems in a basement area are caused by moisture issues from water entrance and lack of venting. A sump pump and some good mold and mildew paint should correct most problems here.
