Rails and Fabric For Awnings
If you own an awning or are thinking of buying one, whether it is for your home, your vehicle (like a camper or a recreational vehicle) or your boat, you should be somewhat familiar with the different types of parts and fabric options so you can know what to choose from or know what is best to buy if you need to buy a part to repair the awning. The two main parts of the awning to consider are the awning rails and fabric. The other main part, if you have a retractable model, is the roller mechanism that makes it operate, but not all awnings have this option, so we will not discuss it here.

Whether you are talking about a porch awning or one intended to be used on your recreational vehicle, the first thing your awning needs is a rail. This will secure the awning to the side of the house over the porch or to the side of the vehicle over the area you wish to enjoy outside. The rail attaches on one end to the side of the structure and the other end of the rail will have a groove or opening in it that will attach to the fabric of the awning to hold it in place. Some awnings will also have another type of rail on the other end of the fabric to finish off the edge or make it easier for you to open and close the awning, but not all models will have this option.
The other thing you need to consider is the type of fabric to use for your awning. Canvas is a very popular choice, due to its strength and durability, as well as the fact that it holds up well to the weather. Vinyl is another option, although it usually doesn’t look quite as nice. Either way, you just need something durable and weather resistant.
