Concrete Mixers

If you have a project coming up around the house where you need to mix concrete, cement, or mortar, then you should seriously consider buying or renting one of the many concrete mixers on the market today.

The basic ingredients of concrete are portland cement, water, and aggregate.  Aggregate is a fancy word, but just means gravel or sand.  Mortar is very similar to concrete, but may use lime instead of the cement as the binder that holds the aggregate together.  The main difference between concrete and mortar is the use; concrete is used to create structural elements such as driveways, columns and beams, and mortar is used to hold together bricks or blocks.

The most rudimentary way to mix concrete is in a wheelbarrow with a shovel.  This method works fine for small jobs that don’t warrant purchasing or renting a concrete mixer.  But for larger jobs, where you will need to mix several batches of mortar or cement, a concrete mixer can help make the job go much faster and create a better mix of cement.

There are several different sizes of concrete mixers, from small hand-operated, to larger trailer mixers to the largest concrete mixer truck.  Most likely, for DIY projects around the house, a smaller portable concrete mixer will do the job.  After deciding how big of a mixer you need, the next decision is whether to buy or rent your mixer.  If you just have one job that you need the mixer for, then renting is probably the best option.  But if you have several jobs that you will be doing, you will want to look into buying.  You can buy a new or used concrete mixer that is in good shape and will get the job done.
