You may want a round one if you can place it in the center of the entry. Otherwise, an oblong table against the wall would work well. Some of the larger homes being built have huge foyers and they can not only hold one table, but a few, along with possibly an antique hall rack to match the tables.

If your foyer is on a much smaller scale, then the furniture should also be smaller. You need to make sure you have enough room to walk through the area without bumping into the table. In an emergency, you need to make sure you and your family can get out easily. A small oak hall table would probably be best for a smaller home.

Then you need to decide if you want a brand new piece or an antique piece. That depends on your budget and how much you want to spend. Either old or new, it will serve the same purpose. The table is to act as a focal point and still be functional. You can decorate the table with a vase of fresh flowers and a few photos that are nicely framed for display.

A moon shaped console table is the original shape of the console and therefore is highly decorative in many cases imitating the French demilune designs of old. They are often marble or glass with curls and scrolls as legs or may be mounted to the wall under an oval or round decorative mirror. They are best used in entryways, halls and as vanity tables in bedrooms and bathrooms. They have one flat side that rests flush with the wall and one curved side that protrudes in a half moon shape. They are often crafted in wrought iron, rich wood, stone, glass with steel or even polished aluminum. The most modern versions will have legs and are tall enough to be placed behind a sofa, however, they are intended to be used between two windows or under a window or as a vanity or hall table.

Some very unique moon shaped console table styles may even be desks, where a chair can be placed to write, but the front is curved outwards and the back is flat. There are also designs that fit into corners and therefore are more of a V shape. These tables can cost anywhere from $100 to over a few thousand. The most common are sold by Powell Furniture and Ballard and other companies that specialize in accent tables. Ensure that you don't buy the cheapest available just to save money, as you will find the more expensive options are built to last a lifetime, and are worth the extra financial investment.
