Styles of Faucets and Bath Taps

In the bath area there are many options to fill the tub. The most commonly seen in a separate tub has a long spout mounted on the deck of the surround, and dispenses water through individual hot and cold handles.

Variations of these are wall mounted bath taps, which can take many forms. A fine example, perfect for a Victorian bathroom, is the 1900 Classic series from Lefroy Brooks. Taking a bolder line on the spout than traditional Victorian taps, it has hot and cold cross handles with porcelain inlays.

The opposite of traditional, Dornbracht has several minimalist taps which stand out. The Watersheet spout in polished chrome, has a rectangular trim piece for the wall, with a ½” tall spout extending flat and wide just a few inches towards the tub.

This style of bath taps should be installed with full knowledge of the required reach of the spout, and the degree to which the existing plumbing will need to be modified.

Traditional Vs. Contemporary

The bath tap has many incarnations, and the lines between strictly traditional designs and extremely modern have been melded together by many designers. The faucet in the 1900 Classic series mentioned above does this, as does the 1920’s industrial look of the Michael Berman series from Rohl.

There are occasions when an antique reproduction of the telephone hand shower and mixer tap combination is the best choice, however. A good example is when a clawfoot cast iron slipper tub is being installed. Consideration should be given to matching all water fixtures in the bathroom as well.

When making final decisions about what bath tap will set the tone for the look of the bathing area, consider function first. If you use the bath frequently, think about getting a unit with a hand shower mounted on the surround. If you prefer not to mix the hot and cold water, look for a faucet with a single mixer control.

Match all fixtures finishes and styles in the room, and the look you want will come together easily.
